My acquaintance with Jake.

Carol, 15 years after the picture of Jake in 2002, I discovered this posting. Brought back so many memories. In 1948, my parents and family sailed on the USS Gen Meigs as missionaries to the Philippines. I was 14 at the time. Nine months later, Jake and Florence sailed on the very same ship to Japan.

In 1958, I heard Mitsuo Fuchida speak at a local church in Port Arthur, TX. I was living in Port Acres, and this was when I first learned about Jake's conversion, and influence on Fuchida.

In 1959, I left Texas to study at Asbury in Wilmore, KY. Wilmore was my boyhood home at 203 College St. Jake and his family lived less than a block away, across the street from my boyhood friend, Paul Carnes. I shared classes with Jake. The one I remember best was taught by Prof. George Turner on the Book of John.

In 1981, while I was flying for NASA as a pilot, I interviewed Gen Doolittle in Carmel, CA. I captured 2-3 hours of conversation with him on cassette tape. His personal account of the Tokyo Raid was very interesting.

Because of my intense interest in WWII, I often thought about Jake and Gen Doolittle through the years. Recently, I saw the old movie, 30 Seconds Over Tokyo, starring Spencer Tracy. More memories.

Thanks for posting these pictures. It was a rare find for me. Sincerely, calvinpitts@gmail.com
